What We Carry: A Journey Through Art, Culture and Belonging
Share
An introduction to my practice, the stories I carry, and the things that find their way onto the canvas.
There are some things we carry that cannot be seen.
Stories passed between generations. Fragments of memory. The feeling of home, even when home is somewhere far away. The parts of ourselves that remain with us as we grow, change, and find our place in the world.
For me, art has become a way of exploring these things. A way of looking closer at where we come from, what shapes us, and what we choose to carry forward.
Welcome to Jazzocreative — a space where I share my art, my process, and the stories that continue to shape the way I see the world.
A practice rooted in story
As a multidisciplinary artist of Samoan and Niuean heritage, my practice is informed by culture, memory, identity, and the experience of belonging. These are not separate ideas that exist only within my artwork. They are part of the lens through which I experience the world.
I work across different materials and forms, including painting, printmaking, illustration, and pyrography. Each medium offers a different way to explore an idea. Some stories emerge through color and shape; others take form through carved lines, printed patterns, or marks etched into wood.
I am interested in the relationship between tradition and contemporary life — how cultural knowledge, stories, and visual languages can continue to live, breathe, and evolve through the ways we create today.
What do we carry with us, when we leave home?
This question sits at the heart of my practice.
Home can be a place, a person, a memory, or a feeling that is difficult to put into words. It can be something we return to physically, or something we hold within ourselves wherever life takes us.
I am drawn to the ways culture and memory travel with us. How they can be present in the everyday, in familiar gestures, in the things we make, and in the stories we continue to tell.
Through my work, I explore the idea of carrying culture — considering how our connections to heritage, place, and belonging are held and expressed, particularly through the lens of diaspora.
The stories held in materials
I am fascinated by the way materials can hold meaning.
A painting allows me to explore colour, form, and atmosphere. Printmaking invites a different kind of attention — the deliberate process of carving, the relationship between positive and negative space, and the moment a design transfers from one surface to another. Pyrography brings together drawing, material, and permanence, leaving marks shaped by heat upon wood.
Each process asks something different of me. Each has its own rhythm, limitations, and possibilities.
I enjoy the relationship between the handmade and the meaningful: the time spent developing a design, the decisions made along the way, and the small details that might otherwise go unnoticed.
There is something important to me about making things by hand.
Creating in the space between
My practice is continually shaped by the space between different experiences: past and present, tradition and contemporary expression, personal reflection and shared understanding.
I am interested in what happens in these spaces. What can be remembered, reimagined, questioned, or understood differently when we make room for more than one perspective?
Art offers me a way to explore these relationships without always needing to arrive at a single conclusion.
I hope my work can create moments of recognition for some people and curiosity for others. Perhaps a colour will remind someone of a place they love. Perhaps a pattern will encourage someone to think about the stories behind the things they see. Perhaps a painting will give someone a feeling they have struggled to articulate themselves.
An ongoing journey
Jazzocreative is an extension of this journey.
It is where I bring together the different parts of my creative practice — the experiments, the finished works, the handmade pieces, and the ideas that are still finding their way into the world.
Not everything begins with a clear destination. Some ideas take time. Some change as I work through them. Others lead me somewhere I did not initially expect.
I am learning to value the process as much as the outcome, and to see my practice as something that can continue to grow alongside me.
Through this space, I hope to share more than the finished artwork. I want to share glimpses of the thinking, making, and storytelling that sit behind it, and to create opportunities for people to connect with the work in their own ways.
Because art does not end when it leaves the studio. It continues in the conversations it starts, the memories it brings forward, and the meanings people find within it.
Thank you for being here
If you have found your way to Jazzocreative, thank you for taking the time to be here.
Whether you have come to explore a painting, discover a handmade piece, learn more about my process, or simply spend a little time with the stories behind my work, I hope you find something that stays with you.
I invite you to explore, ask questions, share your thoughts, and follow along as this practice continues to unfold.
And perhaps, somewhere along the way, you might find yourself thinking about your own story, the places and people that have shaped you, and the things you carry with you.
What do we carry with us, when we leave home?
It is a question I continue to return to, and one I hope to keep exploring through my art.
With care,
Jazzo
